GRAP5060 The Designer's Toolkit
This module is all about learning the basic principles and 'rules' of graphic design.
This weeks area of focus was hierarchy and alignment. We learned how to reliably lay out pages quickly and effectively and how professional designers set out their designs.
Hierarchy & Alignment both provide visual structure for the placement of design items. As humans, we are naturally used to seeing curves etc in nature. Not many natural things have straight lines so we are pre-determined to notice any straight lines and angles.

Grids are used in graphic design for many reasons. They establish clear linear relationships, and over a few pages can establish a visual code for that particular piece of design (for example, the Sun has a very different recognisable system to the Guardian).
There are four main types of grids used in graphic design: Column, baseline, freeform and modular.

This is my first project as part of Year 2 of my degree, and my first one as a graphic design student after switching from Illustration over the summer.
This was challenging as the software is still very new to me and I have quickly realised I have a lot left to learn with the software! I am much more used to working with pen/pencil and paper then transferring it into digital at the last step, but we didn't have much time with this project.
This project was to explore the hierarchy and alignment principles of graphic design. I have made sure that the knowledge I have gained from these principles have been used in this project. I hope that the more I learn about graphic design and the deeper my knowledge and understanding, the better my work will get. The only way is up!!
